From Dusk to Dawn...
Glancing over at Elise and Marc, she watched the couple sharing a tender exchange of whispers and then a kiss. As far as brides and grooms go, her dear friend and her new husband couldn’t be any sweeter. Or any more in love.
For a moment, Avery sat their watching their playfulness and connection as a sadness settled deep within her. She had been so busy, so caught up in work, how could she not have seen how messed up her own relationship had become?
Too busy? Too busy to confront the guy you were in business with? Sleeping with? Supposed to be in love with? Too busy to put a little respect and order back into her personal life?
It was time to make some big decisions. Right now.
Tomorrow when she saw Reid she’d tell him it was over. And that wasn’t all. She was going to buy him out of the firm. Reid may be the face of Martin & Nick’s, but she was the brains and the heart behind everyone of their out of the park home run deals.
What would the firm look like after the break?
She couldn’t know for sure. But she was smart. Damn smart. More than that we was a worker and a fixer. And it was time to put all that energy into restructuring her life. Tomorrow she’d break up with him and then look into her options for getting the firm.
As the idea settled in her brain, a spontaneous smile lit up her face.
Walking over to the fountain, Avery joined the rest of the wedding party for pictures and then spent the next few hours enjoying everything the wedding had to offer. Good food, some champagne, spending time with Elise’s family along with an added bonus of getting a nice ego boost from the glances of the hunk sitting at the next table.
When that same hunk, asked her dance, she didn’t refuse. And when the lights dimmed and the music slowed, she also didn’t refuse the notion of moving deeper into his arms.
Who needed Reid anyway?
And then another thought hit her. Maybe she should do something to commemorate her decision to cut Reid from her life, both personally and professionally. Do something a little wild. A little crazy. Something fun. Something epic.
Shifting slightly away, she looked up at her handsome stranger and then grabbing his lapels, she moved to pull him close before stopping dead in her tracks.
“Wait, you didn’t come here with anyone?”
“You mean like a date?”
Avery nodded yes. They had stopped dancing completely and now stood next to a large column near the edge of the dance floor.
“No, no date.” There was no denying the amused tone in his voice.
“What about someone special in your life? Is there a girlfriend somewhere stuck at home sick? Or out of the country on business?”
“No, no girlfriend,” he replied with a sexy, confident smile.
“That’s good.” Holy cow this guy was gorgeous and when he smiled at her again, Avery felt an all-out flutter move through her stomach. She had been stuck in her office and in a dead end relationship for too long. Boy did she miss this. Feeling flirty. Fun. Looking up at him, she felt this heat, an actual off the charts attraction as everything around them - the band, the laughter, the guests - faded into the background. Before she could talk herself out of it, she clutched the lapels of his suit coat even tighter. And then just as she was about to pull him close, he surprised her by beating her to the punch, slipping his arms around her waist and drawing her near to him. In the next moment, he lowered his head and pressed his lips to hers.
The kiss started out soft. Gentle. And as a soft moan escaped her lips, Avery found herself being drawn deeper into his arms, as a voltaic current rocketed from her toes straight to the top of her head. Everything inside her seemed to come alive and melt at the  same time. When was the last time she felt this way?
Had she ever felt this way?
Being kissed so completely.
Amazing. Epic.
This guy was off the charts sexy. And she was just a girl. A girl who was technically still in a long term relationship with someone.
Somewhere in the back of her brain, something rational and real came through. She wasn’t that girl. A cheater. And even with what Reid had put her through, she didn’t want to be. She didn’t want her break from him to be wrapped up in something out of line with who she really was.
The kiss would be enough.
Pulling away she looked up at him and drew a deep breath to collect herself.
Whew. Tall. Rugged. Handsome. This guy had the whole package and this could be something she could fall into. Way into. Okay, it was officially time to shut this down. Tilting her head, she tucked some wayward wisps of hair behind her ear and glanced up into his eyes.
“Um. Thanks. That was epic. And today, I really needed epic. I don’t know what to say. But I’m sorry. I have to go.”
“Go?”
“Yeah,” Avery replied looking around for a quick exit. Quick being the operative word. Any more time spent in this guy’s company and she’d be begging him to take her somewhere, anywhere, where he could use those lips to kiss her senseless once again, preferably without their clothes on.
“Wait,” he called out, but Avery scooted past him.
“Bye.” She called out, offering a quick wave and a smile before rushing off into the crowd.
